24 questions and answers

01 Can we get married at Cliff House?

Absolutely. We are licensed for civil ceremonies in the Assembly Room (for up to 200) or in the Library on the first floor (for up to 100). For all civil ceremonies you will need to liaise separately with the Registrar to secure the date and there will be a separate fee payable to them. (Tel: 0845 1551002)

02 Can we have the ceremony in the Library and come downstairs for the reception?

Yes, this is the best option if numbers allow but you can have both in the Assembly Room if you choose to.

03 How many guests can Cliff House accommodate?

Receptions in the Assembly Room can seat a maximum of 150 guests although we find that 100–120 is more comfortable. Guests are seated at 5-foot round tables, with 8–10 to a table, although you can choose to hire trestles or other tables if you prefer. The room is licensed for a maximum of 200 standing or evening guests.

04 How much does it cost to hire Cliff House for a wedding?

The rate varies depending on the time of the year and the day of the week, ranging from £750 for a simple midweek low-season civil ceremony in the Library to £5,995 for 2026 and £6,495 for 2027 for a full ceremony and reception package in high season.

07 And what about drinks?

We work closely with a local wine merchant to provide a range of wines for your special day.

Our well-stocked, fully licensed bar is staffed throughout your special day, offering a selection of wines, beer, spirits and soft drinks. All alcohol is bought through Cliff House and we do not offer corkage.

Have a favourite beer or spirit? No problem. We can handle special requests and will be happy to order them, although some extra charges may be incurred with unusual beers.

08 Can we decorate the room ourselves?

Absolutely. We will prepare the tables with starched white linen and the chairs with white chair covers; you are welcome to add as many bespoke touches as you wish. We can recommend local florists along with a range of event-hire companies which specialise in table dressings, centrepieces, chair accessories, chair sashes, decorations, vintage china and more. We have a portfolio of photographs from previous Cliff House weddings and functions which illustrates the versatility of the Assembly Room and may provide inspiration for the layout of your own special day.

09 Can we have candles?

We cannot allow candles in the Assembly Room, although battery-operated candles are a good alternative. Jam jars or glass candle holders are also a hazard outside and it is preferred that they are not used, particularly on the wall.

10 Can we release balloons or fire lanterns?

In order to protect our coastal environment, we do not permit the release of balloons or fire lanterns from the terraces.

11 If we prefer different chairs or tables, can we hire them separately?

Of course. Our chairs and tables do not suit every style of wedding and we have suppliers we can recommend who offer alternatives at an additional cost.

12 Do you have a toastmaster?

Our dedicated Event Manager makes sure your day goes smoothly and we can recommend the services of an excellent toastmaster should you like one.

13 Who lays the tables with cutlery and so on?

This is up to you. Quite often the families and friends of the happy couple get involved with table and room decoration, or you can arrange for your caterer to budget for this.

14 When can we get in to set up?

Normally, you would have the previous afternoon to set up. Our Property Manager, Simon, will be on hand to assist.

15 What happens afterwards?

You are free to come in the next morning to collect any decorations, presents and other belongings.

16 How about a marquee on the terrace?

No problem. We work with a couple of great local companies which stock a range of marquees in different sizes and styles and will be happy to give you a free quotation.

17 Can we have a DJ or a band? Is there room for a dance floor?

Of course. We can also provide a modular stage if there is space with your numbers. For smaller weddings of up to around 80 guests there is ample room in the Assembly Room for a designated dance area. For larger weddings, a few tables are removed at the appropriate moment to create space for dancing. Our licence permits music until 11:45pm.

18 Does Cliff House have disabled access?

Yes. Cliff House has both a lift to all floors and a disabled toilet.

19 Is there any parking at Cliff House?

We do not have designated parking at Cliff House, but there are two-hour parking bays on the road. During weddings and the set-up period, we do our very best to ensure that spaces are saved for the bridal car, deliveries, the Registrar and others who need them. We can liaise with you about your requirements.

20 Can you organise transport for our guests?

Yes. We can provide a quote from a local coach company which can transport your guests from the park and ride at the top of town, or collect them from other accommodation and return them at the end of the evening.

21 Are we allowed confetti?

Yes — natural petals only, and please keep them outside on the terrace.

22 Are we allowed fireworks?

We do not allow fireworks to be let off at Cliff House, apart from sparklers on the terrace, so you would need to consult the Harbour Office about setting them off from a boat. Telephone 01548 843791. The beach opposite is privately owned and you would also need to ask the owners for permission before using it.

23 How do we make a booking?

To secure a confirmed booking you need to fill in and return our booking form with a 25% deposit. The balance is due at least four months before your wedding date. At that time we also ask for a security deposit.

24 Can we come and have a look around?

Of course. We would be delighted to show you around and discuss your requirements. Call 07565 676235 to make an appointment with one of our team.
